Meteorwrongs & Fake Meteorites
Here are some photos of the meteorwrongs... One day I'll post the photos of my First Find. I just have to find it first! :) I've heard that some hunters have gone years without finding a meteorite. I certainly hope this won't happen with me. I have a feeling it won't be though, and I have a really good feeling that I'll be finding one soon. Would that be one over there? Oh, wow! It sure is! Stay tuned...

Holbrook Meteorite? Weight - 5.77 grams.

Is this a Holbrook Meteorite? I bought this 5.77 gram stone from a dealer in Arizona. I was told by the person I purchased it from that it was a Holbrook (Holbrooks are normally classified L6 ordinary chondrite). What's your opinion? Is this the real deal? Fusion Crust? Chondrules. And YES it's magnetic, however it's not a very strong pull.

UPDATE September 18th: I've decided to send this "METEORITE" to an expert to have it examined. The reason is obvious. This might not be a meteorite at all.

Two Questions Remain Unanswered
There are two main questions I want answered.

"Is this in fact a meteorite?"

and if not

"Did the person who sold it to me know it was not a real meteorite?"

I would like to get these questions answered. To do that I will send my rock to a lab to get it examined and classified. I will update this article after I find out.

If it turns out that this is NOT a meteorite, I will not jump to conclusions and assume that the person who sold it to me did so knowingly. It is possible that they believed it was a real meteorite. If it was a simple lack of knowledge on their part I will simply ask for a refund of my purchase price and go from there.

I'll try to have more photos of this specimen later.

If any one has an opinion I'd be glad to hear from you regarding this rock.

If you know of a good lab with a quick turnaround please SEND ME AN EMAIL and let me know about it. I'll send the rock there.

MeteorWrongs
Here are a few MeteorWrongs I found in Franconia. This field has tons of these all across the desert floor and it makes it very difficult for the beginner (like myself) to distinguish between a real meteorite and the iron rich magnetic mineral rocks that are strewn all throughout the area. It's kind of like a testing ground for meteorite hunters.

Franconia would be a good place to learn to hunt if you have someone to show you the ropes.

Numbers 1, 2, 4, & 5 are in this group because they are very magnetic, they don't look anything like meteorites at all. They jumped right up on my stick as soon as it got near them.

This Is Not A Meteorite!

I thought I had found one...

Oh well... I have it on good authority that this is NOT in fact a meteorite. It certainly HAD potential with what looks like fusion crust but after thorough examination by myself and another well known and veteran meteorite hunter/expert I am 95% sure this is NOT a meteorite. Maybe next time... :D
